Official says plan not Smart Growth

In a letter to the Charles County commissioners last week, a department official stated that the proposed rezoning is "inconsistent with the county's Comprehensive Plan and the state's Smart Growth principles."
The letter comes on top of a boisterous public hearing last Wednesday, in which Hughesville residents roundly panned the rezoning request and urged the county commissioners to deny it.

Frank Chaney, president of Chaney Enterprises, said that Martins' sentiments were "left over" from the Smart Growth initiative of Gov. Parris N. Glendenning's administration and did not take the Chaney point of view into account.

If [state officials] don't want us there, then why don't they give Hughesville funding for water and sewer?
Comment by Pauleen: Once the water & sewer feasiblity study is completed by the county, the state just might fund the water & sewer, however, it can't be done until the study is complete. When is smart growth a "left over"? It's not smart to use smart planning? And, since when is "the Chaney view" an official policy to be followed?

The state had a copy of Chaney's application, as well as, his letter written to the planning commission - so, the state was well aware of "the Chaney View".
