Annual 10K Run/Hughesville Festival - Planning in the Works to Raise Awareness of the Hughesville Revitalization Plan
An exciting event is being put together for September 2008 that we hope to make an annual event. Craig Barrett, also known as, HughesvilleRealEstateGuy, a dedicated runner and Hughesville resident, is feverishly working to put together a 10K Run, a 5K Walk/Run, and a Fun Run for kids. The route being planned will include the village, as well as, an opportunity for participants to view some of our scenic roads. We are also planning a Hughesville Festival to coincide with the Run to feature local crafters, local artists, local history, and showcase Hughesville businesses. I believe this fun-filled, family event will strengthen our sense of community and raise awareness of the Hughesville Revitalization Plan.
I'll keep you posted.

I was wondering. Do you have any information on the Hughesville Station Center? I can't seem to find any info on your site. Evidently pad sites are being sold and signs are posted. I live in the Trentino Estates neighborhood and am not happy to see this coming. Are you supporting these efforts?

The person who owns the property is Ray Mertz. 4 acres are located within the village's priority funding area and are already zoned such that he can build there and the public has no input. The remaining acreage is outside the village. Mr. Mertz is not requesting a rezoning, but, is instead requesting a PEP (planned employment park). From what I understand, this is an overlay zone which, from what was explained to me by our former economic director, John Reardon, is used to revitalize an area and is decided on a case-by-case basis. I've also been told that approval of the PEP could constitute a change in the character of the neighborhood. We have requested that Mr. Mertz meet with Hughesville residents to discuss this. He has expressed a desire to work with the citizens and to try to address any concerns. The time, date and location of the meeting will be in the very near future. I will post the information as soon as it has been solidified. I have mixed feelings about the project.

Thanks for your quick response. At some point I would like to talk to you about this but not with this communication method. I have some info that might help with the upcoming meeting..

Craig> be nice to do a run like that over here in Nanjemoy as well. I thought about a Horse Trail Ride with Tee-shirts saying SAVE OUR COUNTY because right now it needs saving!
I can't Run but maybe I can get my old 1970's Skate-Board out of my shed and have one of my dogs pull me across the finish line.
I like the idea. I still would like to know how they kicked the Baseball Park out?

Craig,
Any date set for the run?
You need to get hooked up with the Chespeake Bay Running Club to see if they can help you with organizing the run.

Also, might want to get the word out by listing the run info on Washington Running Report and the Maryland Running Guide.

Hi Johnnie,
A trail run in Nanjemoy would be fun.
Hi Jeff,
The run is set for September 6, 2008 with a start time somewhere around 8 or 9am. The date and distance seems to be a good fit not only for those of us training for fall marathons, but good for local community runners.
Liza Recto, a CBRC member, is measuring my course for USATF certification. I will reach out to the officers of CBRC soon. I'll need as much help as I can get.
I've hired RunAnnapolis.com to do our chip timing and race management. Ron Bowman and others will help us get the word out.
I've missed the deadline for advertising in the July/August Washington Running Report. So, this first race will be primarily word of mouth.
I've got friends that run. They're coming and they've told their friends and so on.
I'm running in the Annapolis 10 miler in August. I plan on bringing some flyers with me and handing them out to runners while I'm there.
I'm starting a new running club in Hughesville. It'll be associated with RRCA. Want to join?
I've run the 10k portion a couple of times. It's a good course and an interesting run. It's a good mix of scenery and terrain.
The proposed courses can be found on my blog.

Thanks Craig.
Sounds like things are moving.
I'll mark the calendar, was going to do the North Face Trail Run that day, but will do Hughesville instead.
I'll pass the word on.
Doing the Annapolis 10 miler too.
Chaptico 10k at the end of August would be good to give out flyers too.
I'll check out your course map.
Thanks Again,
-Jeff
