"The Indianapolis Speedway"

Collision near Hughesville bypass

Bay Net photographer Tim Bell caught the aftermath Saturday of a collision between a Mercedes-Benz convertable and a Toyota Celica on northbound Route 5 at Gallant Green Road in Hughesville, just north of the new Hughesville bypass.

The Hughesville Volunteer Fire Department, along with the Charles County Sheriff's Office, responded to the scene.

Althought a 45 m.p.h speed limit is posted in the area, drivers often speed in excess of 65 m.p.h., leading local residents to dub the bypass "The Indianapolis Speedway."

Police are still investigating the cause of the crash.

I sent this letter to the editors of the Maryland and neighboring county paper editors in reference to the recent Bus and Motorcycle crash that occurred on July 21st in Hughesville. I doubt that it will be published

How many lives will be lost unnecessarily at Gallant Green road?

This past Monday, July 21st, I was on my way home from the airport where my stepson picked me up from a trip out west to see my Son, Daughter and grandchildren. I dropped him off at his home in Pinefield and headed to my home in Hughesville. I was sad to end my vacation, but was anxious to come home to my wonderful wife who had taken ill while I was away. I got to the intersection at Gallant Green road behind the Keller bus that was soon to be part of the end for Timmy Corman. For the next 2 hours everything was surreal, sort of a slow motion, emotional roller coaster. As I stood a few feet away from the devastation, a passerby told me he had gotten through to 911 as I had received a busy signal a few moments before. He told me the paramedics and officers were on the way.

From that time on till now nearly 48 hours later, the emotional roller coaster has continued for me. Everything from seeing the devastation first hand, sadness for Timmy’s family and friends and anger knowing that this could have been avoided and Tim’s young life could have been saved. I’m angry because not a week and a half ago my wife and I discussed the question at this very intersection. How many more people need to be severely injured or die before the County has signals put up here? I’m mad at the Keller bus's and all their controversy over the last few years. I’m mad at myself while during that time of devastation and confusion I didn’t go over to who I now realize was Timmy’s friend and try to console him in his time of need. And, even though I’ve been angered towards the Keller bus line, I mad because I didn’t go to Mr. Crew the bus driver and offer help. I know what I am feeling, he must be devastated.

Call me selfish for my feelings, but this all could have been avoided with traffic signals. I believe the only reason there is no signal here is because it would be detrimental to the purpose of the Commissioners beloved Hughesville bypass. If nothing is done now, the devastation will continue and the odds of it happening again even higher with the high volume of dump trucks going to and from the future gravel pit being planning.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the family and friends if Timmy Corman
